    Notes on this file

      The route

ScanNCut machines cut from Brother's own .fcm files. The route goes through SVG and CanvasWorkspace, Brother's free design software, which imports SVG files.

      1. Open the .studio3 file at the top of this page.
      2. Set SVG style to Thin black cut lines and Area to Just the design. Plain outlines import cleanly and are easy to check.
      3. Download the SVG.
      4. In CanvasWorkspace, import the SVG, check the size, and save or transfer it for your machine the usual way.

      Size and the mat

Cutpeek writes the SVG in millimetres, so it should import at the size you designed. Measure one shape after importing, and check the design fits inside your mat's cutting area, which is a little smaller than the mat itself.

      Layers and colours

Each Silhouette layer arrives as its own group. If you cut different parts from different materials, ungroup in CanvasWorkspace and move each colour to its own mat. Colours don't matter to the blade, only to you.

      Print and cut

Silhouette's print-and-cut registration marks don't work on a ScanNCut, which scans the printed sheet instead. Convert the cut lines here, print your picture, and use the ScanNCut's own scanning to line up the cut.

      Text

Text comes across as letter outlines, so the font doesn't need to be installed on the computer running CanvasWorkspace. You can't retype the words afterwards; change the text in Silhouette Studio first if you need to.

      If the import looks wrong

      • Nothing appears. Check the Layers list above: an unticked layer is left out of the SVG. Also check the file isn't print-only artwork, which has no cut lines.
      • Shapes are in odd places. With Silhouette page, shapes keep their position on a page that may be bigger than Brother's mat. Choose Just the design to trim the SVG to the shapes.
      • Lots of tiny pieces. Overlapping shapes in Silhouette Studio stay separate outlines. Weld them in CanvasWorkspace, or in Silhouette Studio before converting, so the blade cuts one outline.
      • Wrong size. Resize in CanvasWorkspace using a shape whose real size you know as the reference.

      DXF export and batch conversion

Viewing and SVG export are free. For people who convert a lot, or cut with lasers and CAD, a single payment adds:

      • DXF export in millimetres or inches, one DXF layer per Silhouette layer, for laser, CAD and older cutters.
      • Batch conversion: choose many .studio3 or .fcm files and download one ZIP of SVGs or DXFs. A file that can't be read is listed with the reason; the rest still convert.
      • No account, no subscription. Files still never leave your computer.

Print-and-cut registration marks aren't included: Cutpeek can't yet read where Silhouette stores them, so it won't pretend to.
